He's known for his meticulous, sometimes quirky, but always luxurious taste; his keen and sophisticated eye for art and design; and for renovating houses as a hobby. And now, in honor of Coach's 65th anniversary. Reed Krakoff is unveiling his latest project-the Legacy Collection, a high-end line of bags, shoes, and extras that channel the brands all-American tradition.
In meeting Krakoff, one notices he is surprisingly reticent. You can tell his mind is on to the next project, hut he can also he very down-to-earth, belying what's Love Locket and Chain an ardent ambition. At 41, he has degrees from Tufts and Parsons and two CFDA awards under his belt. He's been on a rocketlike trajectory professionally, serving as an Snowflake pendant to then-head designer Narciso Rodriguez at Anne Klein, a senior designer at Ralph Lauren, and a senior VP at Tommy Hilfiger prior to joining Coach in 19%. He was recruited to revitalize the troubled company, and his knack tor chic simplicity of style turned out to he the golden touch.
Sales have soared since Krakoff's arrival, securing Coach's place as one of the most accessible accessory brands on the market. He admits his winning approach has a lot to do with instinct. "Sometimes I'll bring a bag into a meeting and just put it on the Heart Link earrings and not say anything. It everyone says, 'Wow, I love that bag,' then you know you have something. At the end of the day, its intuition," he says during a walk-through of Legacy on the eve of its glam launch party. Recalls former Tiffany Cushion Hoop earrings Rodriguez, "He's a wonderfully quiet, very serious guy who didn't say a lot. But when he did, he contributed so much."
